Principal Engineer Battery Thermal Management System

Job Overview

This position is responsible for leading the development and implementation of battery thermal management systems on Komatsu mining machines. Decarbonization is a key strategic focus for Komatsu and our customers, aiming for a 50/50/50% reduction in scope 1-3 emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. As battery technologies evolve on Komatsu machines, optimizing battery thermal management is crucial for system performance.

Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Design battery thermal management systems for mining equipment, ranging from smaller Komatsu load haul dumps (LHD) to large electric drive dump trucks (EDT).
  2. Develop analytical tools to size battery thermal management systems effectively.
  3. Gather internal customer performance requirements and specify testing to ensure designs meet these requirements.
  4. Collaborate with internal customers and component suppliers to develop the system.
  5. Provide technical support for designing drawings related to lithium battery thermal management and electrical interfaces to machines.
  6. Coordinate with manufacturing engineering, supply chain, and quality teams to ensure cost-effective designs and support testing during manufacturing to ensure quality.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or extensive equivalent knowledge of mining applications, equipment, and technology.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mining or similar heavy industries related to equipment used in the industry.
  • Strong understanding of electric vehicle industry practices, market trends, and new products/services.
  • Working knowledge of full electric and hybrid vehicle battery thermal management systems, including basic components.
  • Knowledge of key decarbonization technologies such as batteries, hydrogen, power electronics, and software systems.
  • Strong presentation skills capable of explaining complex concepts.
  • Proficiency with MS Office software.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally 6-8 times per year for about a week each trip.

Preferred Skills

  • Broad knowledge of the global mining industry.
  • Experience designing liquid- and air-cooling systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, including 3D modeling.
  • Membership in SAE, ISO, UL organizations related to industry standards.

Additional Information

Hiring Range

The role offers a salary range of $121,400 to $151,700, depending on experience and location.
